French press

Forgiving, full-bodied French press

The most forgiving brew method in our guide and our recommendation for any chocolate-forward, medium-roast single origin. Heavy body, classic flavors, hard to mess up.

Ratio
1:15 (e.g., 30g coffee : 450g water)
Grind
Coarse, like sea salt
Time
4:00
Difficulty
1/5

Steps

  1. Step 1
    Boil water

    Take to 96°C / 205°F.

  2. Step 2
    Add coffee

Coarse grind, 30g into the press.

  3. Step 3
    Pour

Pour all the water at once. Stir to break the crust.

  4. Step 4
    Steep

Place the lid on (don't press). Steep for 4:00.

  5. Step 5
    Press slowly

Push the plunger down over 20 seconds. If you fight it, your grind is too fine.

  6. Step 6
    Decant

Pour all the coffee out of the press immediately. Don't leave it in contact with the grounds.

Pro tips
  • · If your French press coffee is muddy, your grind is too fine. The coarse grind is the whole point.
  • · Skip the press once a week and try a 'pour-and-pour' (double brew with the same grounds) for a really clean cup.
